You checked on your dog before bed and everything looked normal. This morning, there is a sticky, red, raw patch the size of a biscuit on their hip. The fur around it is matted and damp. Your dog will not stop licking it.
That is a hot spot. And if you live in India, especially during the monsoon or summer, this is one of the most common skin emergencies pet parents face. Veterinary dermatologists call it acute moist dermatitis or pyotraumatic dermatitis. Regardless of what you call it, the speed at which it grows is what catches most people off guard.
This guide walks you through what causes hot spots to appear overnight in Indian conditions, what makes them worse, and why your vet needs to see this sooner rather than later.
What actually happens under your dog's coat when a hot spot forms
Your dog's skin hosts a normal population of bacteria, mainly Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. Under healthy conditions, the skin barrier keeps these bacteria in check. No problem.
The problem begins when something triggers an itch. A flea bite, an ear infection, a grass allergy, a tiny graze after a grooming session. Your dog scratches, licks, or chews at the spot. That breaks the skin surface. Moisture and warmth flood in. And Staphylococcus bacteria now have the exact conditions they thrive in: warm, wet, and damaged skin.
Within hours, a cycle locks into place. The bacteria multiply, which increases inflammation. The inflammation increases the itch. The itch drives more licking and chewing, which causes more damage. This is what vets call the itch-scratch cycle, and it is the reason a hot spot can grow from a small irritated spot to a raw, weeping wound in less than 24 hours.

Hot spots are self-inflicted wounds. The bacteria involved are usually surface-level, not a deep infection, at least initially. But without treatment, a hot spot can progress from surface colonisation to pyotraumatic folliculitis, where the infection reaches the hair follicles. That is harder to treat and often needs antibiotics. Do not wait for this to happen.
Why do hot spots appear overnight?
Pet parents often assume the hot spot "came from nowhere." It did not. The trigger was already there. The hot spot itself is the visible explosion of a problem that was quietly building.
The speed factor
Dogs can inflict serious self-trauma in a single night of uninterrupted licking or chewing. While you sleep, your dog has hours of access to the itchy spot with no one to redirect them. By morning, the damage is done.
Research on pyotraumatic dermatitis confirms that signs typically appear within 72 hours of the initial trigger, often much faster. In hot and humid environments, bacterial growth accelerates, which means the visible damage appears even quicker.

Why hot spots are worse in Indian humidity
Acute moist dermatitis spikes during summer and the monsoon in India. There are clear reasons for this.
Heat and humidity feed bacteria. Staphylococcus pseudintermedius grows faster when the skin surface is warm and moist. In cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata, where relative humidity stays above 70% for months at a stretch, the environment at your dog's skin surface is a near-perfect bacterial incubator. Dense coats trap this humidity against the skin, making breeds with thick undercoats especially vulnerable.
Monsoon makes everything worse. Dogs get wet on walks. Apartments with limited airflow take longer to dry out. Collars and harnesses stay damp against the skin. Balcony areas remain humid. Mould spores in damp homes trigger allergic itch. Flea populations explode in warm, wet conditions. Every one of these factors either starts a new itch-scratch cycle or accelerates an existing one.
Indian breeds are not immune. Indies (Indian native dogs) have shorter coats and do better in heat, but they are still susceptible when flea infestations or allergies are the trigger. Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Shih Tzus, all popular in Indian households, have the dense or long coats that trap moisture. After every rainy walk, towel-dry your dog thoroughly, especially around the neck (under the collar), armpits, belly folds, and between the paw pads. Use a low-heat dryer on long-coated breeds. Which breeds get hot spots most often?
Any dog can develop a hot spot, but veterinary literature consistently identifies dogs with heavy, dense, or long coats as more likely to develop them. Young male dogs under four years also appear to be overrepresented in clinical studies.

What role does the skin barrier play?
Your dog's skin barrier is the first line of defence against infection. It is a physical, chemical, and microbial shield that keeps bacteria, allergens, and moisture in balance.
When the barrier is healthy, surface bacteria like Staphylococcus pseudintermedius stay at manageable levels. When it is compromised, whether by scratching, allergies, poor nutrition, or chronic dryness, bacteria exploit the gap. That is the starting point for acute moist dermatitis.
Several things weaken the skin barrier in Indian conditions:
- Frequent bathing with harsh shampoos strips the natural oils that keep the barrier intact. Many pet parents bathe their dogs weekly during summer. If the shampoo is not pH-balanced for dogs (dog skin pH is 6.2 to 7.4, while human shampoo is formulated for pH 4.5 to 5.5), each wash weakens the barrier further.
- Nutritional gaps in home-cooked diets. Many Indian dogs eat roti, rice, dal, and chicken. These meals often lack adequate omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and biotin, all of which are critical for maintaining skin cell integrity and barrier function.
- Chronic low-grade allergies that go undiagnosed. A dog with untreated atopic dermatitis lives with a permanently weakened skin barrier, making them vulnerable to hot spots every time humidity rises or flea season begins.
- Prolonged dampness. Moisture on the skin surface softens the outer layer (stratum corneum), reducing its ability to act as a barrier. In monsoon conditions, this can happen daily.

What makes hot spots worse once they have started?
A hot spot that is not managed properly on day one will almost always be bigger on day two. Here is what accelerates the damage:
1. Continued licking and chewing
This is the single biggest factor. Every time your dog licks the wound, they reintroduce bacteria, add saliva moisture, and cause further mechanical damage to the skin. Breaking this cycle is the first priority. An Elizabethan collar (the cone) is not comfortable for your dog, but it is the most effective tool your vet has to stop self-trauma.
2. Leaving the fur over the wound
Matted, damp fur over a hot spot traps heat and moisture directly over the wound. It is like putting a wet bandage on an open cut and leaving it there. Veterinary treatment always begins with clipping the fur around and beyond the wound edges. This allows air to reach the skin and lets the area dry out.
3. Applying home remedies without a vet assessment
Coconut oil, turmeric paste, neem water. These are common Indian home remedies for skin problems. On a hot spot, applying oily or moist substances can trap bacteria and worsen the infection. Turmeric paste, while anti-inflammatory in some contexts, can sting on raw skin and does not address the bacterial overgrowth driving the hot spot.

4. Humidity and lack of airflow
A hot spot in a monsoon apartment with no air conditioning heals slower. Bacteria thrive in warmth and moisture. If possible, keep your dog in a dry, ventilated room while the hot spot heals. Run a fan or AC. Keep the area dry.
5. Ignoring the underlying cause
Treating the hot spot without addressing why it appeared in the first place is a temporary fix. If the trigger was fleas, the fleas need to go. If it was an ear infection, the ears need treatment. If it was atopic dermatitis, your vet needs to build a long-term management plan. Without this step, the hot spot will come back.
Can you treat a hot spot at home?
The short answer: a vet needs to see it. Here is why.
A hot spot looks straightforward, but your vet needs to determine whether it is surface-level pyotraumatic dermatitis or the deeper pyotraumatic folliculitis, where infection has reached the hair follicles. The treatment is different. Surface hot spots may respond to topical therapy alone. Folliculitis often needs oral antibiotics and sometimes anti-inflammatory medication.
Your vet also needs to identify the underlying trigger. Without that, you are treating symptoms, not the problem.
What your vet will typically do
- Clip the fur around and beyond the hot spot edges to expose the full extent of the wound and allow air contact.
- Clean the area with a chlorhexidine-based antiseptic solution to reduce the bacterial load on the skin surface.
- Prescribe topical treatment, usually an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory combination, applied directly to the wound.
- Break the itch cycle. This often means a short course of anti-itch medication (oral corticosteroids like prednisolone for a few days, or newer options like oclacitinib). The goal is to stop the scratching so the skin can heal.
- Fit an Elizabethan collar to physically prevent your dog from reaching the wound. This stays on until the hot spot has dried and started healing, not just until your dog looks uncomfortable wearing it.
- Investigate the trigger. Skin surface cytology (a simple swab test) checks for bacteria and yeast. A flea comb checks for parasites. Your vet may also examine the ears, check the anal glands, or discuss allergy history.
Vet note
Do not skip the Elizabethan collar. It is the part of treatment pet parents resist the most and the part that matters the most. A hot spot cannot heal if your dog is licking it. If your dog is distressed by a cone, ask your vet about inflatable collar alternatives, but do not remove the barrier entirely. The wound needs protection.
When is a hot spot urgent?
All hot spots need veterinary attention. But some need it faster than others.
See your vet within 24 hours if
The hot spot is spreading visibly over hours, not days. Your dog has a fever, is lethargic, or has stopped eating. The wound has a foul smell or thick, yellowish-green discharge (signs of secondary pyoderma). The hot spot is near the eye, ear canal, or genitals. Your dog is a puppy under six months, a senior dog, or has an existing health condition. There are multiple hot spots appearing at once.
A single small hot spot in an otherwise healthy adult dog can usually wait a day or two for a vet appointment, provided you keep it dry, prevent licking with a cone, and do not apply anything to it. But do not wait longer than that. These wounds escalate fast.
How to reduce the chance of hot spots coming back
Prevention is about removing the triggers and supporting your dog's skin to resist bacterial overgrowth.
- Stay on top of parasite prevention. Use a vet-recommended flea and tick preventive year-round, not just during tick season. Flea allergy dermatitis is the most commonly reported trigger for hot spots in veterinary literature.
- Dry your dog after every wet exposure. Rain walks, baths, swimming. Towel dry, then use a low-heat dryer for thick-coated breeds. Pay attention to the neck, armpits, belly, and between the toes.
- Keep the coat clean and well-brushed. Regular brushing removes dead undercoat that traps moisture and heat. During shedding season (common in Labradors and Golden Retrievers), increase brushing frequency.
- Use pH-appropriate grooming products. Dog skin is more alkaline than human skin. A pH-balanced dog shampoo protects the skin barrier. Avoid bathing more than once every two to three weeks unless your vet recommends otherwise.
- Address allergies with your vet. If your dog gets recurrent hot spots, an underlying allergy is likely. Your vet may recommend an elimination diet, allergy testing, or a long-term itch management plan.
- Support skin health through nutrition. Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) support the skin barrier and have anti-inflammatory properties. Zinc and biotin contribute to healthy skin cell turnover. If your dog eats a home-cooked diet of roti, rice, and chicken, these nutrients are often lacking.
- Check ears regularly. Ear infections are a silent trigger for hot spots on the face, jaw, and neck. Redness, odour, or head-shaking warrant a vet check.
Frequently asked questions about hot spots in dogs
A hot spot is a localised area of inflamed, infected skin that your dog creates by repeatedly licking, scratching, or chewing at one spot. The medical term is acute moist dermatitis or pyotraumatic dermatitis. The wound is red, moist, and often covered with a sticky discharge. Recurring seasonal hot spots usually point to an underlying allergy (atopic dermatitis or flea allergy) combined with the high humidity of Indian monsoons. Moisture trapped in the coat creates ideal conditions for bacterial overgrowth, and monsoon conditions drive up flea and mould populations. Talk to your vet about a long-term allergy management plan rather than treating each hot spot individually.
It is best to avoid this. Hot spots need to dry out, not stay moist. Coconut oil is an occlusive (it seals moisture in), which can trap bacteria against the wound. Turmeric paste can irritate raw, broken skin and does not address the bacterial overgrowth that drives the hot spot. Let your vet recommend an appropriate topical treatment.
With proper treatment, surface-level hot spots (pyotraumatic dermatitis) typically improve within 3 to 7 days. The area will dry, the redness will reduce, and new skin will start forming. Deeper infections involving the hair follicles can take 2 to 4 weeks. Keep the Elizabethan collar on for the full duration your vet recommends, even if the wound looks better.
Most surface-level hot spots heal without scarring, and the fur grows back within a few weeks to a couple of months. Deeper infections that progress to furunculosis (ruptured hair follicles) can cause permanent hair loss in the affected area. Early treatment greatly reduces this risk.
A hot spot is a bacterial skin reaction caused by self-trauma. It is wet, sticky, and painful. Ringworm (dermatophytosis) is a fungal infection.
